Agios Nikolaos is a coastal town located 69km east of Crete's capital Heraklion, and north of the town of Ierapetra and west of the town of Sitia.

Standing on the shores of the beautiful Mirabelo bay, the name of Agios Nikolaos derives from Saint Nicholas, a common place name in Greece due to the fact the Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of Greece and sailors.

Things to See and Do in Agios Nikolaos

The Archaeological Museum - First opened in 1970, the museum features pieces from the Neolithic era, the Minoan era and the Greco roman era. One of its famous exhibits is that of goddess of Mirtos, a liberation vessel in for the form of a female figure.

The Folklore Museum - Established in 1985, the folklore museum is located on the ground floor of one of the oldest buildings in town, the port authority building. Here you'll find displays of traditional Cretan handicrafts unique to the region such as textiles, woven goods and embroidery.

Beaches - There are many beaches to choose from in Agios Nikolaos, both sandy and shingle. These include; Almyros Beach, Ammoudi Beach, Municipal Beach Kitroplatia, Votsalo Beach and Havanias Beach

Church of Panagia Kera - With the finest preserved Byzantine era Frescoes in Crete makes this church one of the most cultural and historically significant churches on the island. The frescoes on the dome and the central nave depict scenes from the new testaments, the baptism and the raising of Lazarus.
